Brandon Grace won his first USPGA title at The Heritage on Sunday and with that secured his card until 2018 and also got himself back to the Masters next year. The South African is a class act and it won’t be long before he’s winning a major or two. This week he also plays in Texas and is a nice price to make it back to back wins. He’s played the last two years and his improved from his debut, and although a 30th place is nothing to write home about, he looks in such good form that he’s a big player come Sunday.
A player I often look out for each week is the extremely talented but erratic Charley Hoffman. He can put a great round together but rarely gets it done for the four days, even in Majors he’s often up there come the final round, but this weekend I can see him putting himself in contention. The last seven years in Texas he hasn’t been out of the top 15 and his form reads 11th,11th,3rd,13th,2nd,13th and 9th, so it’s safe to say he plays well around here. If he can keep that one bad round off his card then we can see him in the winners enclosure. I’m also taking him to be the first round leader, as he has done many a time in the last few seasons.
Last week saw the professional debut of Bryson Dechambeau and a 4th place allowed him to walk home with a huge cheque. To carry on that form from the Masters was impressive and big things are ahead for 22 year old from California. He has his own style and pressure isn’t an issue, he will only get better and better this season. The bookies have cut his odds a little but not enough to make him unbackable.
Finally my outsider to cause a shock and belie his odds is last years 4th place finisher Chesson Hadley. It was this time of the season in 2015 that he started putting some consistent results together that propelled him up the rankings. Three top tens showed he has the talent and he’s yet to spark this season. Good memories of Valero could give him the springboard he needs at massive odds.
