Stage 17 – Giro D’Italia
Stage 16 was a great spectacle of riding with my selections not quite getting the luck with a 4th (Some bookies paid 4 places) and 8th place, but it was still a great stage to watch. Today we’re back to a sprint finish and the Italians will be aiming for victory on home soil. Plenty of the teams will be struggling with their legs at this deep stage of the Giro, so a few small bets are advised.
Depending on the peloton it’s possible a break may succeed but I’m only picking one guy at big odds to get involved. Nicola Boem of Bardiani is a strong rider who will look to make the breakaway, and being Italian he may even get some help from a kind moto driver, you never know!
Of the sprinters, on paper it’s between Sacha Modola and Giacomo Nizzolo, both have fairly strong teams around them, but on the downside neither are yet to win a stage and are too short for me to put my money on with confidence. Alexander Porsev has impressed so far and is nice and consistent. He has two 5th places, one 6th and one 7th. He no longer has Tsatevich to lead him out, but can still count upon Kochetkov and Kuznetsov. He’s a real contender for the podium.
A couple of long shots to enter the fray are Henrick Haussler and Sonny Colbrelli. Sonny is looking strong just now, but only gets his chance as Ruffoni is away home. He will be guided into place by Paolo Simion, a fast rider in his own right. Colbrelli will hope for a top 5 finish at the very least. Heinrich Haussler is a strong rider and will be fairly fresh compared to most. I’m looking forward to seeing what Haussler can do in this final week. He can still call upon Stake Laengen and Kluge to help with positioning. The hard racing should have taken an edge off the pure sprinters, meaning that Haussler should be able to compete with them. Like all the IAM riders, he is now riding for a new contract.
