Betting Tips for the Smart Punter

Rory can tame Bethpage Black

Bethpage Black hosts the first of four Fed Ex play offs with huge rewards to the winners. It’s a beast of a course and long hitters such as Rory McIlroy and Jason Day can tame the field with their pin point driving and accurate short games.

This time last year Jason Day began his surge towards world number one and he should be thereabouts in this first end of season tournament, but his odds are in single figures and the value can be found elsewhere. My main pick is Rory McIlroy who’s game should suit these long fairways and tight greens. There’s talk that he’s had a bad summer, especially with the Olympics debacle, but form wise he’s recorded a win and three places, which is impressive in anyone’s book. He needs to stay focused, but with the Ryder Cup on the horizon he should be finely tuned and making a push for some end of season big wins.

The form of players like Furyk and Snedeker are impressive at present and I like their chances, but the length of the course puts me off backing them as they will come up short on quite a few holes. Instead the reliable Phil Mickelson is the second choice and since his driving accuracy has improved he’s once again a man to be wary of come Sunday. He’s had a welcome break and will be keen to show Davis Love and the Europeans exactly why he’s in the Ryder Cup team once more.

A couple of big outsiders this week and I really like the chances of Billy Horschel. He’s a brilliant driver whose overall long game is among the very best on the circuit, but below average putting means his best form comes in bursts when he’s at his most confident. Last weeks fith in the Wyndham bodes well for this streak player who two years ago came from nowhere to claim the Tour Championship and the 10 million bonus.

Finally I’m doubling up on Kevin Kisner after putting him up last week. He was out of the reckoning and then shot a 65 on the final round to finish top 10 and prove his form is coming to the boil. His long game will suit Bethpage and he’s a real dark horse coming in to this week where he will be keen to qualify for the BMW and Deutche in the next few weeks.
