A brutal stage in front of the riders with over 20km of uphill gradient to tackle. This is the last time the GC can really attack the pink jersey, and it’s going to be amazing pictures and scenery all the way to the finish.
The last three times a Giro stage has been held here it’s been the GC that have fought it out, so looking at history it’s hard to see a breakaway succeeding, but you never know! Plenty of options for the challengers where they can try and break Kruijswijk, including sending a couple of riders up the road and attacking him late on, or using the descents to spring an attack. He looks too strong for me and he’s yet to win a stage, coming second twice. This is the day for him to stamp his authority with a victory towards securing pink.
My other GC pick that will be there at the end is Ilnur Zakarin. A great tour so far and one of the best climbers in the field. Kruijswijk, will look to work with Zakarin as he isn’t a real threat to his pink jersey.
I still believe Astana will have a crack at the stage and Tanel Kangert is the man for the breakaway. They are leading the team classification and will need a strong rider in the break if Cannondale and Movistar get in there, so keep an eye on Kangert finishing the tour well.
Finally a long shot in David Formolo. He’s a big rider for Cannondale and has shown form on similar stages, winning on the Tour de France a couple of years ago on a brutal stage very similar to this.
