Individual Time Trial today

pro2punter - Time Trial

It’s the first of two Individual Time Trials today and after yesterday’s shenanigans it’s hard to predict what else may happen this Tour de France. We didn’t expect to see Chris Froome running up Mont Ventoux without his bike and then the jury to reward him with the same time as the bunch. He was a lucky man as plenty say it’s just the way bike racing is, you take the rough with the smooth. Today is a 37.5km time trial and it’s fairly open considering past years when Tony Martin has dominated proceedings.

Chris Froome and Tom Domoulin take up the favorite spots with the bookies and it should suit them, although probably more so Domoulin. It’s not a course for pure time trial specialists as it’s constantly weaving and there are no real long drags for the aero dynamics to work well. Tom Domoulin looks to be in great form after winning a big stage in Andorra so he’s the main pick today.

I’m selecting a few bigger priced riders as it’s quite possible that these guys could come to the fore today. Rohan Dennis generally enjoys the shorter TT’s but we can’t forget he was once the holder of the hour long record and comes here in good form, surely targeting this stage for victory. Another clearly in good form is KOTM leader Thibaut Pinot who took the French National TT championship two weeks before the Tour started and has also won two other time trial stages in 2016, something to be proud of. And finally a small bet on BMC’s Tejay Van Garderen who is always there or thereabouts in these events. He got dropped yesterday on the big climb and may well have saved himself for today’s stage which suits his style perfectly.
