Betting Tips for the Smart Punter

Euro 2016 Group A Tips

One of the easier groups at the Euros, both hosts France and neighbors Switzerland will be expected to qualify and progress through to the knockouts with relative ease. Below we give you an overview of the teams chances and our best bets for Group A.

As per usual in the big tournaments, the hosts are in Group A and will kick us off vs Romania on 10th June in Paris. They have only played friendlies this year, winning seven but also receiving a shock loss against Albania. In general they play well on home soil, but depending on their performances the crowds can easily get on their back, so a good start is needed. Star players to look out for are Juve’s Paul Pogba who already has 30 caps despite being only 23 years of age. He’s a natural goalscorer from midfield and has emerged as Les Bleus main man when goals are needed. Anthony Martial and Antoine Griezmann will start in attack and it will be interesting to see how the talented pair match up. Didier Deschamps team are favorite to take the trophy, but we reckon the pressure of performing at home will stop them short of glory.

The Swiss will aim for second place and hope to qualify behind France. Their last three Euro Championship have ended at the group stages, but this time they have a talented squad and a respectable qualifying campaign finishing runners up to England. The fact that their star man plays for Stoke kind of sums up their chances, but in a fairly easy group they should amass enough points to move in to the knockout stages.

Romania changed their manager halfway through the qualification rounds and employed Anghel Iordanescu for his third spell in charge of the national team. It’s hard to see Romania upsetting the odds and maybe not even getting out of the group, as they have relatively little firepower and will have to rely on a solid defence. Expect a couple of 1-0 defeats or even a bore draw 0-0 at some point.

Runners up to Portugal in qualification, they managed to finish above both Denmark and Serbia, which in itself is no mean feat. They have one big player in Basel’s Taulant Xhaka, but in him alone they will find it tough going. A shock victory against France in a friendly earlier in the year will bring them confidence, but their Euro’s will be trying to beat Romania for a possible third place qualification.
