Stage 10 – Giro d’Italia
We head in to the second week of the Giro and after a rest day it’s straight in to the mountains, with a typical Giro stage. Riders are often very wary after a rest day and the GC boys will be on extra alert to any attacks. It looks like a breakaway will succeed today with an early brutal climb followed by ups and downs all the way.
Ilner Zakarin was going like the speed of lightning in the TT until he hit the deck, which stopped him in his tracks. He needs to make up plenty of time and could well attack today, probably not in the break but towards the end when most of the top riders will be marking each other.
The next three picks are all breakaway contenders at big prices. Przemyslaw Niemic is the first selection to get in the break for Lampre. His team mate Ulissi has already taken a stage from the front and the Pole has what it takes to plant himself in a group of strong riders.
With Rigoberto Uran blowing up in the TT it looks like Cannondale will aim for stage victories. The young and talented David Formolo may well be let off the leash in a similar sort of stage he won before with a solo. I really like his chances at massive odds.
Finally a GC contender who is a bit far down for the top 10 to worry about is Dominico Pozzovivo. The tiny Italian star got dropped in Stage 8 but paced himself back very well. He’s a patient rider who also has a kick and rode this stage extremely well back in 2014.
