A brutal Stage 9 for the GC boys

pro2punter - Giro d'Italia

Four huge climbs today in what the peloton are calling the queens stage of the Tour de France and a brutal finish to the week. It starts in Spain and finishes in Andorra so there will be plenty of Spaniards desperate to win this one, but it will be a hard fought slog all the way with no respite whatsoever.

Yesterday Chris Froome showed his intent by going on a solo break on the descent and surprising his rivals. He now sits at the top of the pile and wears the yellow jersey. The super Sky team will be able to control the pace more than ever and unless something happens to Froome it’s hard to see him not winning this stage. Quintana is the main rival but he’ll have to have an exceptional day to make in roads on the mallet juene. So I’m getting on Chris Froome to take the stage and then a couple of bigger prices to come from the pack.

Yesterday I put up Rafa Majka and he was out in the break and a short price to win, but having Pinot there was no good for the GC boys so eventually he got reeled in. Today he will be looking for another break and mountain points so will have chances again to get a big enough gap for a stage win. He may not win but you’ll definitely get value for money backing him.

I have two big outsiders for the day in Pierre Roland and Sergio Henao. Roland looked like he’s in good form om Stage 8 and this is his sort of terrain. He’s a long way down on classification so should be allowed in a break if that’s his plans for the day. Sergio Henao rode brilliantly yesterday and is clearly Sky’s second choice. He attacked the peloton a couple of times and may well be a foil for Froome when it comes to the last climb of the day.

One more rider I have to mention is Wilco Kelderman, who had a mechanical yesterday which cost him plenty of energy on the big climb, but still managed to finish oin the pack. He’s Lotto’s number one pick and he’s a huge price today to be in the mix up. At 1 min 55 secs down he could well be in the mix come the end, so a small bet is advised.
